Moving can be a stressful experience for everyone involved. It is time consuming and there are many details that need to be considered. However, with the proper preparation, your moving experience will be able to go smoothly. Here are some of the more important things to keep in mind as you prepare to move:

1. Take Care of Any Necessary Address Changes
This is something that many people tend to overlook. Address changes do not usually go into effect right away, so the sooner you start the process, the sooner that your items can start going to the correct location. This is especially important for crucial information, such as bank statements and bills of any kind. Notify your bank, post office, or the subscription department of any periodical that you have a subscription to. Doing this will ensure that all of your mail will be arriving at your new address by the time you move in.

2. Contact Moving Companies
This is the biggest decision you will make during the entire moving process. Moving can be expensive. Therefore, it is important that you take the search for a moving company very seriously. The price of movers can vary widely. You should call as many as you can and get estimates from all of them. Simply getting as many estimates as possible can potentially save you a large amount of money. Along with the price that the movers charge, it is important that you do some research into any moving companies that you are considering hiring. Ask for references and talk to their previous customers to find out if they were satisfied with the service. Verify that the company is licensed and if their license is current. Most importantly, you will need to verify that the company is fully insured. If the movers damage any of your possessions during the move, you will need to be sure that they have insurance to cover any damages that they might cause.

3. Packing Supplies
There is no need for anyone to pay high prices that shipping companies and retail stores charge for packing supplies. Boxes, bubble wrap and foam lining can all be acquired for free with a little effort on your part. Simply go to all of your local retail stores and ask them if you can have these packing supplies after they receive their shipments. Many places will give them to you because they will have no use for them. It would be wise to call ahead and find out when the store will be receiving a large shipment. Go to the store on that day. This will give you the best chance of getting the supplies that you need.

4. Throw Out Your Junk
Finally, you can use moving as an opportunity to get rid of the stuff you never use. There is no sense to pay a moving company to move items that are just going to sit in your new home and collect dust. Throw it away so you do not have to deal with it later.
