Signs That You Need a New Roof

Knowing when to replace your roof is a difficult task for many homeowners. Often, small repairs may be made to fix your roof, and other times, you may simply need a replacement in order to prevent serious damage to your home. As essential as the roof is to your home or building, it’s not worth taking chances when you start to notice a problem. If you notice any of the following problems with your roof, it is likely time for a replacement, or at the very least, a phone call to a roofing repair company.

Missing Shingles

Many homes lose shingles after a major storm, but have you noticed shingles lying around in your yard after a fairly mild night? Missing or blown off shingles is a clear sign that your roof may require renovation. Missing shingles is typically a sign that the shingles are getting weak and the tar strip has worn down after years of use and breakdown from the sun. Repairs may be possible to keep your roof a little longer at this point.

Cracked Or Curled Shingles

If the surface of your shingles is cracked, or you notice that your shingles are starting to curl, it is time for a replacement of your roof, among other home improvements. This happens when the sun breaks down the layers of asphalt inside the shingle, which then causes the shingle to shrink in and curl up. At this point, your shingles are vulnerable to being torn off your roof when a strong gust of wind comes by. Curled or cracked shingles also create a prime environment for water damage.

Dark Spots

When you start to notice dark spots on your roof, this is often a sign that your shingles need to be removed and replaced. This typically happens when your shingles lose granules that protect the shingle’s asphalt from being broken down by UV rays. A large amount of granules leaves your shingles unprotected and increases the weathering process. In this situation, shingles should be replaced immediately to keep your home safe from water damage.

Attic Concerns

If you are concerned about your roof, you can start your inspection by checking your attic. If there are any dark spots or water spots, your roof is likely in need of repair or replacement. Even damp areas inside your attic may mean your roof is in trouble.

When To Call A Professional

When you are unsure about the state of your roof, it’s always safest to call a professional to come and inspect the problem. Roofing problems can lead to the structural weakening of your home and can be a serious health hazard for your family. Any noticeable problems with your roof should be discussed with a professional.
