Quick And Easy Tips For Cleaning Your Refrigerator

by Editor on May 8, 2013

Like any other appliance you own, your refrigerator should be cleaned regularly. However, many people put off this essential task until it is too late. Too late meaning that they can find some foods that have expired 6 months ago or food that don’t look like a good anymore. To avoid an unpleasant mess in your fridge, use the following tips to keep your refrigerator clean.

Prepare Your Cleaning Supplies
It is always easier to clean when you have your supplies properly organized. If you have a cleaning kit made up beforehand, you can get right to work without having to waste time running around, looking for what you need. Take a bucket or tub and fill it with the tools that you will need to clean your fridge, such as sponges, brushes, reusable towels and a bottle of all-purpose cleaner. When it is time to clean the fridge, just pull out your kit and get to work.

Organize Your Food
Cleaning your refrigerator gives you a good opportunity to reorganize its contents. Over time, the food in your fridge might become disorganized. How many times have you just shoved a tub of leftovers in wherever there was room, or put the milk in the only space left? When you are cleaning your fridge, you can finally get everything organized properly.
Empty the food out of your fridge and organize its contents on your counter while you clean. This gives you the opportunity to dispose of any old or expired items. When you are putting the food back in your fridge, be sure to organize it by type. Certain types of food need to be stored in certain areas of your fridge. This way, they will stay fresh longer.

Put The Removable Pieces In The Sink
Instead of trying to clean the drawers or shelves while they are in the fridge, take them out and clean them in the sink. This is not only easier on you, since you will not have to stretch and strain to reach them, but you can give them a more thorough cleaning. Fill your sink with warm water and add some baking soda to remove any odors.
While the removable parts are soaking, use a toothbrush to scrub other parts of the fridge. Make sure to let everything dry thoroughly before you put it back in the refrigerator. Moisture provides an ideal environment for bacteria to grow that can contaminate your food.

Start At The Top And Work Down
It is best to start cleaning at the top of the fridge and making your way down. This way, you will avoid having dirty water or bits of food fall down and recontaminate areas that you have already cleaned. Do a particularly thorough job once you reach the bottom of the fridge, since this is the area where the most food and dirt will gather.

Cleaning your fridge is an important task that needs to be done regularly. By keeping your refrigerator clean and tidy, you can prevent your food from spoiling and making you or your family members sick. Remember, the cleaner your fridge, the healthier your food will be.
