Money Saving Tips When You’re Moving

by Editor on May 21, 2013

When people move, they often spend more money than they intend, and when they aren’t careful, the costs just add up until they are completely out of control.

If this has happened to you, or you are hoping to find ways in which you can prevent this from happening to you before your next move, follow these money saving tips so that you can keep more money in your own pocket.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is great advice for a lot of things, and moving is certainly one of them.  Take some time to research and ask questions to a handful of different moving companies. You will get a good idea of what the market is like and what kinds of prices are normal. Try to compile a list of questions that you would like to ask them, and answer any that are asked of you so that you are able to attain the best deal possible.

The Purge

If you have lived in your home for any length of time, there is a good chance that you have a lot of things you do not really need.  Things accumulate especially when you have lived in one location for many years. If this applies to you, the best way to approach this is to go through your house and if you haven’t used an item in a number of months, purge or donate them to charity. This is especially wise if you are downsizing or have hoarded a lot of things over the years, and would now like to make space for new things in your new home. By also disposing of things that you do not need or no longer use, you will have less things to move and be burdened by on moving day.

Adjust Your Timing

If possible, try to move on a weekday to save money. Most moving companies are booked on Fridays and for weekends, and if you book off time from work and move on an off day, you may be able to avoid traffic, make the move more efficiently, and save some money.

Do Your Own Packing

Many people use packing services these days to avoid having to pack all their possessions themselves.  While this is very convenient and reduces your workload, it still costs extra money.

Moving is already an expensive task, and by going to the grocery store, picking up some boxes and packing your belongings yourself, you can save a significant amount of money. You can label and organize your belongings in a way that will make it easy for you to unpack when you arrive in your new home. If you are unsure of how to pack certain items, ask for advice or look online for the best way to pack. You want to ensure that your possessions are safe while in motion.

Although packing your possessions will save you a lot of money, it is important to note that the time it will take for you to ensure that your possessions are taken into account and properly cared for will be significantly more. Plan ahead and account for this before you set your moving date.
