If you’re in the process of building a new house, adding a room or doing a bit of remodeling, one thing that you’ll definitely need are doors. They are what help to keep our energy costs down, they give us the privacy that we need and, if we select just the right ones, they can also add to the decor of our homes.

Yet, unless you’re working specifically with an interior decorator, you might not be aware of all of the interior door options that are available to you. That’s why we wanted to provide you with a brief list of options. That way, you can select the doors that are just perfect for you as well as your home.

Consider the material first. Before thinking about the style of doors that you’d like, it’s a good idea to do a bit of research into the materials that doors are typically made out of. For the interior of a home, doors are usually made out of solid wood, solid core (which usually consists of a blend of plywood or molded composite exterior) or hollow core doors that are made out of a wood frame, a hardwood surface and is then filled with a rigid cardboard.

Then think about the kind of door that you’d like. Once you have an idea of the kind of material you would like your doors to be made out of, it’s then time to think about the actual style that you’d prefer. Of course, a big part of this depends on the kind of room you are putting the door in, along with the way you plan to decorate the particular space. But, we do have some options for you to consider. Panel doors are the ones that you oftentimes see in residential buildings. They tend to come in square or rectangular patterns although you can add rounded tops or glass inserts if you’d like. Bifold doors are ones that hinge together. Typically, you see them as the doors used for walk-in closets. French doors are favorites if you want to make a dramatic effect when it comes to entryways, perhaps leading from the living room to an enclosed backyard deck. Pocket doors are doors that slide. They are the ones that you’ll oftentimes see as a connector between a master bedroom and its bathroom. And then there are actual sliding doors. They are commonly made of glass and they are similar to French doors in the sense that they are usually used to connect a major room to the outdoors (or another large-sized space) as well. Then of course, there’s the flush door that is pretty plain and is usually used as an entrance in a room such as the basement.

Consider the finishes too. Say that you decide to install some retractable screen doors into your house. In order to give them a polished look, you will need to give the frame a really great finish. For these kind of doors, typically paint finishes are best; however, do keep in mind that you can paint any kind of door in any type of color that you’d like. Do keep in mind that if you’re going to go with something like a cherrywood or oak front door, it really is best to stain it instead of paint it. That will give the door a really rich appearance and will help it to last for years to come.

As you can see, there are all kinds of interior door options for you to choose from. For more information on the selecting the ones that are best for your house, consult with a customer service associate at a local home improvement store.
