How To Find A Good Moving Company

by Editor on May 15, 2013

If you are looking for movers in New York City or elsewhere, you want to find a moving company that is right for you. You also don’t want to be the victim of a scam, which sometimes happens in the moving business.

In addition, you want to make sure that your movers are sober, treat your possessions with care and respect, and get all of your items to your new location in one piece. You also want to make sure that your movers show up on time and act professionally.

So how do you find movers in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and elsewhere that could be the best for you? Here are some tips to finding a good moving company:

Make sure you know your rights and responsibilities

The moving company is required by federal law to give you a brochure entitled Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move (click hereto see what is in the brochure.) Read it first, before starting the moving process, so you can learn more about what you need to know.

Ask your friends, family and colleagues

Getting good word of mouth on a moving company is a great way to find a company that could do a great job for you. This way, you could find a moving company you may be able to trust. On the other hand, you could also hear about a bad company that did a terrible job for your loved one, and that is something to keep in mind as well.

Check review sites

Reading what real-world sites like Angie’s List and Yelp have to say when it comes to the moving company can tell you a bit of what your experience is. It is important to look through multiple reviews over time when doing so. Looking at one or two reviews, whether positive or negative, is not enough. After all, the company could get somebody to write a fake positive review, and a competitor or somebody else with an axe to grind could also write a fake negative review. That is why it is important to see what a cross-section of people say.  Another site to check is RipOffReport. . Also check to see what ratings the company gets from the Better Business Bureau – an A+ is best.

Check license and insurance

You need to make sure that the moving company is licensed and insured. You can check licensing information here with the person’s USDOT number. This way, you can make sure that the moving company is who they say they are.

Get several in-person estimates

Try to get two, three or four in-person estimates from movers in New York City and elsewhere. This way, you can get a sense of which is the best deal for you. It is important to show them everything you need to move in order to get the most accurate price, and to ask them questions about how long they have been in business, what they do to ensure quality control, etc. Keep in mind, though, that if you get an estimate that is super-low, the company may be not be able to back that up.

Good luck with your move. Click here to learn more about moving companies.
