Boss' Window

When it comes to cleaning our house, there are certain things inside of it that, if we were really honest with ourselves, we don’t maintain nearly as well as we should. Take our windows, for example. Although they might get a thorough washing during our annual spring cleaning, other than that, they can easily go months with not much more than a squirt of Windex and a paper towel.

That’s why we wanted to take out a moment to provide you with some tips for how to properly maintain the windows that you have throughout your home. Being that your windows help to protect you from the weather’s elements, it’s a good idea to do all that you can to keep them in excellent condition so that they can last for years to come.

Read the instruction manual. When you first had your windows installed, you were given an instruction manual. The reason why it’s a good idea to refer to it is that inside of the booklet, there are specific directions on what you need to do for the specific kinds of windows that you have. So before doing anything else, read the manual first.

Do not power wash your windows. In order to keep windows clean, you need to wash both the inside as well as the outside of them. When it comes to the exterior, avoid doing any power washing. This tends to be too strong for your window panes and can oftentimes damage the caulking that’s around them.

Use a mild cleaner on both sides. For both the inside and outside of your windows, it really is best to go with a mild cleaner; one that is either ammonia-based or vinegar-based. Just make sure that you avoid going with anything that contains chlorine bleach or is a liquid grease remover. Also, try not to use a detergent that has an organic solvent in it or even is a mild abrasive like Soft Scrub. More times than not, that kind of cleanser will only leave scratches on your glass.

Know how to lubricate them. If you were to consult with a window company such asElba Windows and Doors¬†about what you can do to take care of your windows, something that they might suggest is that you make sure to use the right kind of lubricant when you need to apply some to them. Typically, a lubricant that comes in the form of a silicone spray is best. That’s because oil-based ones only attract more dirt to your windows.

Check your screens and your windowsills. Another good thing to do is inspect the screens on your windows about once every three months just to make sure that they are not damaged. If you would like to clean them from time to time, we suggest going with an accessory brush that comes with your vacuum. Also remember to check your windowsills for signs of cracks or tiny holes. If you see indications of either, applying a bit of caulking should remedy the situation. For more information on how to properly care for both your screens and cracks along your windowsill, contact your local home improvement store.
